Trends in wholesale, AI and real-time data analytics

Current trends in wholesale

Everything is constantly changing, and wholesalers and distributors are experiencing this firsthand. Keeping up with the latest trends and staying ahead of the competition is a real challenge. Back in March 2023, we already wrote a blog about trends in wholesale, and now it is time for an update. With the right information and supporting tools, businesses can respond smoothly to these changes. The trends currently shaping the wholesale sector are highly diverse. Below, we highlight some of the most important ones.

E-commerce and digital integration continue to grow

E-commerce continues to claim an increasingly larger share of the market. In 2022–2023, 18% of total revenue came from e-commerce, and this percentage keeps rising every year, it has now reached 28%.* However, keeping an online store up to date is often labor-intensive. By linking the webshop to an ERP system such as Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, all products and prices can be managed centrally. This prevents pricing discrepancies or inconsistent product data and makes webshop maintenance much easier.

In addition, the demand for Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) continues to grow. By working with standardized formats, orders, delivery notes, and invoices can be processed efficiently. This increases speed and accuracy throughout the supply chain. During the same 2022–2023 period, 18% of total revenue was generated through EDI sales, and this share is expected to grow exponentially as all Belgian companies prepare for mandatory digital invoicing. Under new regulations, from January 1, 2026, all Belgian businesses must send invoices using UBL standards through the secure Peppol network in the fight against invoice fraud.

Sustainability and circularity as priorities

Customers and companies value sustainable and socially responsible trade practices more and more. Wholesalers are responding by offering greater transparency throughout the supply chain. Digital tools make it possible to track the entire lifecycle of products, from production to delivery. This helps minimize reputational risks and legal implications.

At the same time, the demand for circularity is growing: reusable and recyclable products are becoming more popular. An ERP system can help manage return flows and product reuse

Dropshipping and flexible logistics

The rise of dropshipping continues unabated. More and more online stores without physical locations are adopting this model, where products are shipped directly from the wholesaler to the end customer. This shortens delivery times but also requires highly efficient order management. A flexible ERP system can automatically process dropship addresses and accurately calculate transportation costs. Tools such a Distri+, in combination with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central provide the necessary support.

AI and data-driven decision making

Artificiële intelligentie (AI) is playing an increasingly important role in optimizing business processes. Inventory management, for example, can be significantly improved through AI-driven analytics. By combining sales forecasts with historical data and market trends, companies can make more efficient purchasing decisions. This reduces the risk of overstocking or shortages and improves margin management.

Fast action through real-time data

An up-to-date ERP system provides access to all critical business data anytime and anywhere. Real-time rapporting and dashboards enable companies to react quickly to market fluctuations and changing customer demands. In a world where speed and flexibility are essential, cloud technology offers a clear competitive advantage.

Investing in the future

The market is highly competitive and requires a proactive approach. Wholesalers that invest in the right technologies and partnerships can differentiate themselves and adapt to the latest trends. With a powerful software solution such as Dynamics 365 Business Central combined with Distri+, companies are ready for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.
